Choosing the correct vehicle category in the BAJ Driver App is important because each vehicle type is designed for different passenger requirements and different BAJ services.
BAJ New Zealand supports a range of vehicles, from standard passenger cars used for Ride Bidding through to premium taxi vehicles, larger passenger vehicles, wheelchair-accessible vehicles and Maxi Vans.
The main vehicle categories are BAJ, Comfort, BAJ XL, Wheelchair and Maxi Van.
BAJ also operates a vehicle downgrade system. This means that an eligible higher-category vehicle may receive bookings from appropriate lower vehicle categories as well. For example, a Comfort vehicle can receive eligible BAJ Ride Bidding jobs, while a BAJ XL vehicle can receive BAJ XL, Comfort and eligible BAJ Ride Bidding jobs.
This system gives drivers access to a broader range of suitable booking opportunities while still allowing passengers to choose the vehicle or service that meets their needs.
If you are planning to drive with BAJ, you can start from our Become a BAJ Driver page.
Understanding BAJ’s Vehicle Downgrade System
BAJ’s vehicle category system is designed so that a higher-category vehicle does not necessarily have to wait only for bookings specifically created for that category.
Where the vehicle and driver are eligible for the relevant service, higher-category vehicles can also receive suitable bookings from lower categories.
For the main passenger-car categories, the structure works as follows:
BAJ
→ BAJ Ride Bidding opportunities
Comfort
→ Comfort bookings
→ Eligible BAJ Ride Bidding opportunities
BAJ XL
→ BAJ XL bookings
→ Comfort bookings
→ Eligible BAJ Ride Bidding opportunities
For example, if a driver has an approved BAJ XL vehicle, the vehicle can remain available for BAJ XL customers while also being eligible for suitable Comfort and Ride Bidding opportunities.
Likewise, an approved Comfort vehicle does not have to operate only on Comfort bookings. It may also participate in eligible BAJ Ride Bidding jobs.
The downgrade system therefore helps make better use of available vehicles while giving drivers access to more opportunities through the platform.
The system does not mean that a smaller vehicle can move upward into a category for which it does not qualify. A standard BAJ vehicle does not become a Comfort or BAJ XL vehicle simply because a higher-category booking is available.
BAJ – Standard Vehicle for Ride Bidding
The BAJ vehicle category is the standard category used for BAJ’s Ride Bidding service.
It is generally suitable for eligible standard passenger vehicles such as sedans and hatchbacks that meet BAJ’s driver and vehicle requirements.
BAJ Ride Bidding allows the passenger and driver to interact around the trip fare through the BAJ platform. It is separate from the dedicated Taxi service category.
A driver with a standard eligible vehicle who wants to participate in Ride Bidding can therefore select the appropriate BAJ vehicle category.
Importantly, BAJ is not the minimum Taxi category.
Taxi services begin from Comfort.
However, drivers operating approved higher categories such as Comfort or BAJ XL may also receive eligible BAJ Ride Bidding opportunities through BAJ’s downgrade system.
You can learn more about this service on the BAJ Ride Bidding page.
Comfort – Minimum Category for BAJ Taxi Services
Comfort is the minimum vehicle category for Taxi services through BAJ.
A Comfort vehicle should provide a higher level of passenger space, presentation and comfort than a basic standard vehicle and is designed to accommodate up to four passengers, excluding the driver.
Suitable vehicles may include well-presented sedans and other eligible passenger vehicles that meet BAJ’s Comfort requirements.
Comfort is particularly important because it acts as the starting point for the BAJ Taxi category.
A driver registering specifically for Taxi services should therefore not select the standard BAJ category as their Taxi category.
The minimum Taxi category is Comfort.
Because BAJ operates a downgrade system, an approved Comfort vehicle can also receive eligible BAJ Ride Bidding jobs.
In simple terms:
Comfort vehicle = Comfort opportunities + eligible BAJ Ride Bidding opportunities.
This allows a taxi-qualified vehicle to participate in more than one suitable type of BAJ booking.
BAJ XL – Larger Five-Passenger Vehicle
BAJ XL is intended for larger vehicles that provide additional usable passenger or luggage space while accommodating up to five passengers, excluding the driver.
BAJ XL should not be interpreted simply as any vehicle with a large boot. The overall vehicle should provide the additional space and passenger capability expected from the category.
Depending on the vehicle, this may include selected larger wagons, SUVs, people movers or similar passenger vehicles that satisfy BAJ’s verification requirements.
BAJ XL sits above Comfort in the main passenger-vehicle category structure.
Because of the downgrade system, an approved BAJ XL vehicle may receive:
BAJ XL bookings
Comfort bookings
Eligible BAJ Ride Bidding bookings
This means a driver using an approved BAJ XL vehicle has access to the opportunities appropriate to the XL category while potentially receiving suitable lower-category work as well.
The reverse does not apply. A standard BAJ or Comfort vehicle cannot simply accept a BAJ XL booking unless that particular vehicle has been approved for BAJ XL.
Can Taxi Vehicles Receive BAJ Ride Bidding Jobs?
Yes.
An eligible vehicle operating within BAJ’s Taxi categories can also receive Ride Bidding opportunities where the driver and vehicle are approved for the relevant BAJ services.
This is one of the important advantages of BAJ’s multi-service platform.
Drivers are not necessarily restricted to only one source of work simply because their vehicle qualifies for a higher category.
For example:
A Comfort taxi vehicle may receive Comfort Taxi bookings as well as eligible BAJ Ride Bidding jobs.
A BAJ XL taxi vehicle may receive BAJ XL bookings, eligible Comfort bookings and eligible BAJ Ride Bidding jobs.
The booking offered to the driver will still depend on the service configuration, driver status, vehicle approval, location and other platform requirements.
Taxi Vehicle Requirements
Drivers should only select a Taxi category when both the driver and vehicle meet the applicable requirements for operating that service.
For the BAJ Taxi service, the vehicle must have an appropriate NZTA-approved in-vehicle camera system where required.
A normal consumer dash camera is not a substitute for an approved in-vehicle taxi camera system.
Taxi vehicles must also have a suitable in-car payment facility, such as an EFTPOS or other applicable payment machine, so passengers can make payment directly in the vehicle where required.
Therefore, owning a vehicle that looks like a Comfort or BAJ XL vehicle does not automatically make it eligible for the Taxi service.
BAJ reviews the driver’s documentation, vehicle information and applicable compliance requirements as part of the registration and verification process.
Drivers can begin registration through the BAJ Driver Registration page.
Wheelchair – Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicle Category
The Wheelchair category is intended specifically for vehicles equipped to safely transport passengers who travel while seated in a wheelchair.
The vehicle must be capable of carrying at least one wheelchair passenger and should have the appropriate wheelchair-accessible configuration and equipment for the service.
A wheelchair vehicle may also contain additional passenger seating depending on its approved configuration.
For example, some larger wheelchair-accessible vans may carry one wheelchair passenger together with several additional seated passengers.
The defining feature of the Wheelchair category, however, is not simply the size of the van. The vehicle must genuinely be configured and equipped for wheelchair passenger transportation.
Drivers should therefore not select the Wheelchair category merely because they own a van or people mover.
The correct accessibility equipment and vehicle configuration are required.
Maxi Van – 10-Seater Passenger Van
The Maxi Van category is designed for larger group transport and generally refers to an eligible 10-seater passenger van within the BAJ platform.
A Maxi Van can be suitable for larger families, airport groups, corporate travel, events, tour groups and other bookings where a standard passenger vehicle does not provide enough seating capacity.
The vehicle must have the appropriate approved seating configuration and meet BAJ’s registration and verification requirements.
A driver with a 10-seater passenger vehicle should therefore register the vehicle in the relevant Maxi Van category rather than selecting BAJ XL solely because both vehicles provide additional space.
BAJ XL and Maxi Van serve different passenger requirements.
BAJ, Comfort and BAJ XL – What’s the Difference?
The easiest way to understand the three main passenger-car categories is by looking at both vehicle type and booking eligibility.
BAJ
A standard eligible passenger car or hatchback used primarily for Ride Bidding.
It does not move upward into Comfort or BAJ XL bookings.
Comfort
A premium 4-passenger vehicle and the minimum category used for BAJ Taxi services.
Through the downgrade system, an approved Comfort vehicle may also receive eligible BAJ Ride Bidding jobs.
BAJ XL
A larger 5-passenger vehicle with additional usable space, including extra luggage capacity.
An approved BAJ XL vehicle may receive BAJ XL, eligible Comfort and eligible BAJ Ride Bidding opportunities.
This structure gives higher-category vehicles broader access while maintaining the vehicle standards associated with each individual category.
Which BAJ Vehicle Category Should I Choose?
Drivers should select their category according to the actual vehicle they intend to register, rather than choosing a category simply because they would like to receive its bookings.
If you operate a normal eligible sedan or hatchback primarily for Ride Bidding, the BAJ category may be appropriate.
If you have an eligible premium vehicle that accommodates up to four passengers and you meet the Taxi requirements, Comfort is the minimum Taxi category.
If your vehicle accommodates up to five passengers and provides additional usable passenger or luggage space, it may be suitable for BAJ XL, subject to approval.
If your vehicle is properly configured to transport at least one wheelchair passenger, select Wheelchair.
If you operate an eligible 10-seater passenger van, select Maxi Van.
BAJ will review the submitted vehicle information during the verification process.
Why Selecting the Correct Vehicle Category Matters
Correct vehicle classification helps BAJ match customers with an appropriate vehicle while ensuring drivers receive bookings for which their vehicle is suitable.
It also helps prevent situations where a passenger requests extra seating, additional luggage capacity or wheelchair accessibility but receives a vehicle that cannot provide the requested service.
The downgrade system already gives qualifying higher-category vehicles access to eligible lower-category opportunities, so there is no need for drivers to incorrectly register a vehicle in a lower or higher category simply to try to receive more bookings.
Drivers should submit their genuine vehicle details and allow the correct category to be verified.
BAJ Is More Than One Type of Driver Work
BAJ is being developed as a multi-service New Zealand mobility platform rather than limiting drivers to one type of passenger booking.
Alongside Ride Bidding and Taxi opportunities, eligible drivers and transport operators may be able to participate in other BAJ services depending on location, vehicle type and platform approval.
Drivers interested in receiving and sharing suitable transport opportunities with other operators can learn more about the BAJ Driver Operator Network.
For longer journeys between cities and regions, see BAJ Outstation and Long Distance Trips.
These services are designed to give eligible drivers access to different types of transport opportunities through one platform while ensuring that each booking is matched to an appropriate vehicle and service.
How to Register Your Vehicle With BAJ
Drivers interested in joining BAJ should begin by providing accurate driver and vehicle information.
BAJ’s verification process reviews the submitted information before the driver and vehicle are approved for the relevant platform services.
Do not select a higher vehicle category simply because your vehicle appears similar to another category.
Vehicle capacity, configuration, service requirements and supporting documentation can all be considered when determining the appropriate category.

Join BAJ New Zealand
Whether you operate a standard passenger vehicle, premium taxi, larger five-passenger vehicle, wheelchair-accessible vehicle or Maxi Van, selecting the correct vehicle category helps you receive suitable opportunities through BAJ.
