Android or iPhone for BAJ Drivers? Which Phone Works With Each BAJ Service

BAJ drivers can use both Android phones and iPhones, but there is one important difference every driver should understand before choosing their device.

For most BAJ services, both Android and iPhone can be used. This includes Ride Bidding, Outstation bookings, tourism-related jobs and the BAJ Driver Operator Network.

However, drivers who want to operate BAJ Taxi rides must use an Android phone because the BAJ taximeter functionality is currently built into the Android Driver App and is not available on iPhone.

This article explains which phone works with each BAJ service and why taxi drivers need to pay particular attention to their device choice.

Android Is the Recommended BAJ Driver Device

For drivers who want access to the widest range of BAJ services, a modern Android phone is the recommended option.

The Android version of the BAJ Driver App supports the main driver functions across the platform, including taxi operations, Ride Bidding, Outstation travel, Driver Operator Network jobs and other available booking categories.

Because the Android phone may also be running location services, navigation, the BAJ Driver App and the taximeter at the same time, drivers should use a reliable phone with a good processor, sufficient RAM, stable GPS and a healthy battery.

A very low-powered or older Android phone may struggle when multiple services are running together. For professional daily driving, the phone should be treated as an important piece of work equipment rather than simply a personal handset.

BAJ Taxi Drivers Must Use Android

This is the most important difference between Android and iPhone.

If you want to register for and operate BAJ Taxi bookings, you should use an Android phone.

BAJ taxi rides use taximeter functionality that operates through the Android Driver App. That functionality is not currently available on the iPhone version.

This means an iPhone-only driver should not register for the BAJ Taxi service expecting to operate metered taxi rides through the app.

An iPhone driver can still use many other BAJ services, but Taxi and the BAJ taximeter are the key exceptions.

For drivers who currently use an iPhone but want to operate BAJ Taxi bookings, the practical option is to keep a suitable Android phone for BAJ driver operations.

Why the Taximeter Is Different

A taxi booking is different from many other BAJ services because a taxi journey may depend on an approved metered fare process.

The BAJ Android Driver App includes the functionality required to support this taxi workflow. The meter can operate alongside the ride, navigation and other driver features within the Android environment.

The iPhone Driver App does not currently include the same taximeter functionality.

This is why the restriction applies specifically to Taxi, rather than to the entire BAJ platform.

If you are signing up only for Ride Bidding, Outstation or Driver Operator Network opportunities, an iPhone can still be suitable.

Ride Bidding Works on Android and iPhone

BAJ Ride Bidding is available to eligible drivers using either Android or iPhone.

Ride Bidding allows a passenger to suggest a fare for an immediate journey. Available drivers can review the request and, depending on the booking process, accept the passenger’s offer or respond according to the available bidding options.

Because Ride Bidding does not rely on the BAJ taxi meter, drivers can use this service on either supported mobile platform.

This makes Ride Bidding particularly useful for drivers who do not operate as taxi drivers but still want access to passenger bookings through BAJ.

Outstation Bookings Work on Both Platforms

BAJ Outstation bookings can also be managed from Android and iPhone.

Outstation is designed for longer-distance travel, including journeys between towns, cities and regions.

These bookings may be immediate or scheduled depending on the service configuration.

A driver using an iPhone can therefore still receive eligible Outstation opportunities without needing the Android taximeter.

Android drivers can use the same service while also retaining access to additional Android-only taxi functionality.

Tourism Jobs Are Available to Android and iPhone Drivers

Eligible BAJ drivers may also receive tourism-related transport opportunities where these are available through the platform.

These can include visitor transport, airport-to-tourism journeys, regional transfers, day-trip transport or other travel-related work.

Tourism opportunities are not dependent on the BAJ taxi meter, so they can be managed through both Android and iPhone where supported.

The Driver Operator Network is designed to turn bookings that might otherwise be lost into potential business opportunities.

Suppose a driver in Christchurch receives a future booking in Queenstown.

The driver may not want to travel empty to Queenstown simply to complete that pickup.

Instead of declining the customer’s booking completely, the driver can make the job available through the BAJ Driver Operator Network.

A suitable approved driver operating in or near Queenstown can accept the job.

The original driver or operator can set the amount being offered to the receiving driver while retaining an agreed commission or margin for arranging the work.
